Nature’s Ally.......

"Good morning,” Antri wished her parents as she joined them for breakfast. With a glass of milk and some biscuits in hand, she sat down to read the newspaper. Antri took the papers and scanned the headlines.

As she was going through the pages, her eyes fell on some troubling facts in bold letters: ‘Global warming’, ‘Gangotri glacier getting lesser snowfall each year’, ‘Death of phytoplanktons in the oceans and seas’, ‘Forest areas being cleared in State’, etc. She was disturbed as well as irritated. For the past few days, such facts were consistent in the newspapers. As the television was turned on, the reporter announced, “Today, many leaders from across the globe attended the World Climate Conference. They discussed the ways to reduce carbon dioxide emission. This would help curb global warming – a rising problem.”

That night, Antri was lost in deep thought. She thought, “Why can’t people realise that travelling short distances in cars, etc., wastes a lot of resource. It also emits harmful gases to increase global warming! We talk about decreasing global warming, while so many forest areas are getting destroyed in the State almost daily. But we hardly care!”

The next few days were quite thrilling for Antri, as her holidays began. Antri’s parents decided to make a tour of Guwahati. They spent some enjoyable days but it was soon time to return home. The journey wasn’t as comfortable as Antri had expected. The air near Jagiroad was too polluted. Smoke surrounded the area. A paper mill was releasing gases with a foul smell. What alarmed her the most were the surroundings. Around the paper mill, there are normal habitations of people, who carry out their daily activities without even realising that they are constantly inhaling the toxic emissions from the mill.

Back home, Antri pens all her experiences and feelings in a diary. She writes,
“January 21, 2016.
Dearest Kit,

Everywhere, there is the issue of global warming coming up. Posters have been put up everywhere, ‘Stop deforestation. Start planting trees’, ‘Don’t throw litter’, ‘Keep your surroundings clean’, etc. Well, as for trees, the focus should be on not cutting them down. Keep a small garden around the house. No one is asking people to hoard saplings and plant them on roadsides! A backyard garden consisting of beautiful flowers, fruit trees and a few rows of vegetables will give ample green cover.

There are other things I forgot to mention, ‘my Guwahati trip’ and the ‘paper mill’. You see, Father decided to take us on a tour of Guwahati and we had a lovely time in the zoo and I just loved the planetarium. The whole trip was wonderful. But something was amiss. The paper mill! I know that they are important, they provide us with paper to write, but if we take a few precautions, they would also not harm Mother Nature.

A small act can contribute towards the society. I am just a child, but I, too, have my dreams and I wish adults would see this as ‘the dreams and feelings of an upcoming revolutionary’. We have to change the situation all around us.
