Spot the 4-Leaf clovers.

There is at least one in each photo and as many as three. Well, one of them is actually a 5-leaf clover! I have been finding these all of my life.

4-leaf clovers are the most common good luck symbol in the Western world. It's said the four leaves stand for hope, faith, love and luck. The tradition goes back quite a long time. In the Middle Ages, it was said that the bearer of a 4-leaf clover could see fairies. The bearer could also recognize witches and evil spirits lurking about.

Hhhmmm... The Cambridge dictionary says
just finding one brings good luck to the finder.

Now, I'm interpreting rules that were established long before the internet or even photography but I think we have a loophole. I take this to mean you will have good luck when you find any of the ones below.

The ratio of 3-leaf to 4-leaf clovers is 5,000:1. The chance of finding one is 10,000 to 1. (I have made this easier for you.)

A combination of genetic and environmental factors cause regular 3-leaf clover to grow a fourth or more leaves. Scientists have isolated the responsible genes and there are now people growing patches of 4-leaf and 5-leaf clovers.

My experience is that if you can find one, there are probably others in the patch. I have never found one in isolation. And I don't go out of my way to find them. They usually pop up to taunt me when I'm mowing the lawn.

How are you doing so far? The photo below is of an even rarer 5-leaf clover. In Ireland, these are particularly prized and called the rose clover.

The characteristic 4-leaf clover shape is called a quatrefoil. It was quite popular in Gothic architecture.

Quatrefoil comes from the Latin words meaning four leaves; quattuor meaning four and folium meaning a leaf.

It has been an on again, off again trend to include white clover in lawn seed. As a legume, clover has the little nodules on its roots that perform nitrogen fixation, pulling nitrogen out of the air and bringing it into the soil. That's good for your grass. Nitrogen is a component of fertilizer and the first ingredient represented in the ingredient numbers. A bag of 5-10-10 fertilizer contains 5% nitrogen.
