Water Wednesday: San Ramon Waterfall

Look way up! The last 1 km (.62 miles) of the hike was almost vertical, even treacherous, with 70% humidity and heat making for tough slogging. What there was of a trail ran alongside and in the stream leading us upwards.

Long before you saw it, you could hear it. Then finally, there it was. In a lush tropical setting, almost a third of the way up the Maderas Volcano, was the beautiful San Ramon Waterfall, locally, Cascada San Ramón.

We waded into the shallow pool into the falling curtain of water to cool off. Once you arrive, the next difficulty is getting a photo. The entire 52 meter (170.6 foot) waterfall won't fit into one shot and there is no place to back up. Then there is the scale. You need that little human in the corner to appreciate the height. Do you see him?

It had been overcast all day. When the rain started, it was that warm tropical rain. Most of my photos have little droplets of water from the rain or mist.

When you're not used to a steep hike like this, it can be a little demanding, but I discovered a whole other set of muscles on the trip down! Definitely, the waterfall is worth the hike and it's not even a long one, only 3 km (1.86 miles). Well... that's after getting a boat ride to Isla Ometepe and hitching a ride that morning. I wondered about the other trail that led to the volcano's crater and lagoon. It sounded like a phenomenal trip and one that is not permitted without a local guide. Apparently, there is much more mud. That one will be left for another day.

The mists swirled around at the top of the falls, hiding and revealing the trees. Does this photo show more?
