The first to call Japan The Chinese became the Land of the Rising Sun, for which the sun rose in the morning from the side where the Japanese islands were located. Islanders really liked this metaphor, and they began to call their country the phrase "Nippon" ("Nihon"), which can be translated as "the birthplace of the sun" or "sunrise." Geographically this name is quite true: Japan is the easternmost country on the world map, and the Japanese meet the sunrise ahead of everyone on the planet.
