The Dresden Gallery. Germany
The old city in Dresden closely encircles the Theater Square with Semper's opera in the center. But the main attraction of the city, no doubt, is still the famous Dresden Picture Gallery. For five centuries now, her collection has been replenished with masterpieces by the best artists of the world.
In 1945, Dresden was bombed by Anglo-American aircraft. The building of the gallery was destroyed, some of the paintings were irretrievably lost. Surviving paintings in the last weeks of World War II, the German fascists hid in damp limestone mines, which caused great damage to the masterpieces of painting. From the final death they were rescued by Soviet soldiers. The paintings they found were taken to the USSR, restored and in 1955 the GDR was transferred. After the restoration of the gallery building in Dresden, the rescued paintings again adorned its walls.
