SWAN POND 😊 1st part

in #nature5 years ago (edited)

Finally got my butt into Swan Pond. In the Kayak that is. Turned out to be the perfect day. Clear skies, temperature around 70 / 21 celsius, very low humidity with a slight wind that kept the bugs away but still able to easily maneuver the ship.

The spot where you launch is right by the road. There was one car there so I thought I would be sharing the pond with another boater. Swan pond draws fishermen so this time of the year you would expect some activity.

My luck, it was a lone fisherman without a boat. So it looks like I will have the whole 57 acre pond to myself.

You only get a small Spring window to explore this shallow pond. That's due to the abundance of lily pads that inhibit paddling.

Hop aboard and lets see what we can find.

I'm starting along the left side of the shore and see if I can go around the whole perimeter.

The white of the flower lilies was so bright I had to photo-shop the photo to tone down the intensity. Those little black things inside the flower are Gnat flies.

The shore line is irregular in spots to make the journey interesting. Coming up is a hard bend to the left.

Around the bend looking back from where we came.

Behind these new growing Reeds is another boat launch site. The stake in the water marks the entrance and the depth, 3 feet. There is a dirt road that only a 4 wheel vehicle is recommended leading to this spot. It is overgrown with ticks everywhere so most boaters use the easy area by the road.

There are a variety of lily pads growing in in different areas as well as large open sections of water on the far side.

We have made it to where there is an outflow from the pond. An old concrete barrier divides the pond from a canal that leads into the Peconic river. The canal feeds a honeycomb of smaller canals that once was a cranberry producing farm.

We aren't halfway around yet but lets end here and pick it up in a second part ....

Leave you with a map to mark our journey.

We stop at the red dot on google map coming from where the pond touches River road.

Seems like a nice place to go to. By the way why do they call it swan pond?

Pretty unspoiled hasn't changed much in hundreds of years.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. A great pond to kayak in. Lots of lily pads and your photos are terrific.

Thanks @redheadpei was a good day all around :-)

Looks like a beautiful day to be out on the pond and how beautiful it is with so much beauty to see

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :)

Thanks Jay, always a plus when you come back with a dry camera :-)

Ohh yes indeed that is always good ;)

I want to come to your pond! You have quite the summer. We don't have water lilies yet.

Come quick... Summer gets hot and humid with lots of bugs :-)

Wait. I have already flown to you. 😸

Looks like you had a perfect day. Love all of the lily pads and hope they attract all of the gnats so you don't inhale any by mistake. LOL!

Yeah everything worked out that day :-)
