The Latin species name of this tree - resinosa - describes the resin that flows freely when the bark is penetrated, for example by woodpeckers. Turpentine was originally made from pine resin. The bark of this tree has a reddish tint, has two long needles in a bundle and needle and branch ends point upward. It is found throughout the North East but particularly in the more northern areas and around the Great Lakes.
