After A $14 Billion Upgrade, New Orleans’ Levees Are Sinking

in #nature5 years ago

Sea level rise and ground subsidence will render the flood barriers inadequate in just four years

Interesting and sad article about how soon New Orleans isn't going to be protected by the levees that were just built for billions of dollars. I've said it before and I'll say it again, South Louisiana needs to use the sediment that is flowing in the Mississippi River to build up land all around New Orleans. Too much of that sediment is flowing out into the Gulf of Mexico where it does no good. The levees wouldn't need to be as strong if we didn't have the Gulf of Mexico breaking on them. The levees need to be surrounded by swamp and marsh that would buffer any storm surge.

Fresh water diversions from the Mississippi River are the best solution to land loss and rising sea levels. I sure hope they build some more.....
