State hires contractor team to build Mid-Breton Sediment Diversion

in #nature5 years ago

In January, state officials announced that they were going to design the diversion to carry a maximum of 75,000 cubic feet per second of water and sediment during high-river periods, an increase from the project’s original plan to carry a maximum of 35,000 cubic feet per second.

Interesting and important article about coastal restoration in South Louisiana. This project is a must to help restore the coast that has been so damaged by the oil and gas industry and cutting off the marsh from the Mississippi River. The sediment from the River is really the only way to rebuild the wetlands long term. I'm all for this project and hope it doesn't take too long to build out.

The $800 million price tag is kind of scary though, seems to me it shouldn't cost near that much to build a hole in a levee, but what do I know, lol.
