The Champawat Tigress

in #nature5 years ago

Though extremely reluctant to hunt and kill the majestic animals he had so much admiration for, even those with a few human kills attributed to them, in 1907 Jim Corbett eventually agreed to the pleadings of officials and natives alike, and began the hunt for his first man-eating tiger - the Champawat tigress. This famous tiger still holds the world record for the most human fatalities, a number which is rather hard to believe despite a mass of evidence that supports it. All of her kills occurred during the day, and in fact, Corbett later wrote that he was unaware of any tiger-related deaths occurring at night.

This great cat, after racking up over 200 human kills in Nepal, crossed the border into India and began anew its murderous spree in the Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand - Corbett's boyhood home. Although several hunters tried to track her down in Nepal, eventually the Nepalese army was called in. Though unsuccessful in tracking her down, they managed to force her to abandon her territory and cross the border. Another 234 human victims would be slain in India by this seemingly unstoppable killing machine by the time Jim took up the hunt.

Oh My Goodness! This tigress was dangerous. I live in India, and have heard about her many a times.

That's an Interesting story. I wonder how they knew that it was the same tiger killing all of those people? I wouldn't think they would be able to prove that even by sightings. I'm not an expert though and the story is entertaining nonetheless.
