Our new friend gets comfortable & I am finally able to get a shot of the mother 🐥
After 3 days in our courtyard this young bird appears to be quite relaxed now and we have decided we will keep looking after him till he flies away. We stopped feeding him worms when we saw that his mother was dropping in with a variety of food in the rare moments of silence.
This morning we found him trying to escape up a very big wall. Either that or he was looking for camouflage!
There is no easy escape from this courtyard for a flightless bird as you can see here and on the other side of the wall is a road with lots of cats, so he actually fell into the perfect place to be protected from them, now that we have sealed up the only hole cats can enter from.
The kids have been really enjoying his presence and each morning the bird is the first thing they want to see. The 'find the bird' game is much harder than you might imagine as he is never in the same place twice.
I think they are still a bit confused as to why he hasn't flown off yet. Sometimes they will stare at him for long periods, like they are waiting for him to do something exciting!
Here you can see what the mother has been bringing. The worms go down instantly but these larger insects are perhaps a little ambitious of her. Interesting to see an unripe cherry in the mix there too.
Photographing the mother
Desperate to get a shot of the mother feeding her baby, I hid in the house this morning with the door just a little bit open. The day was warming up and the baby was resting in the sun when suddenly he started chirping and it was immediately evident something was about to happen.
The mother appeared with another cherry.
Only then was I certain that we were looking at a Thrush. With her beautiful freckled belly and slim features there can be no doubt. This bird is eaten as a delicacy around here so I won't be telling the neighbours!
In this sequence you can see her feeding him small pieces of worm.
As a photographer it is a real pleasure getting these kind of shots and as a human being it is a pleasure doing my bit for mother nature whilst watching my children learn first hand a little more about the animal kingdom.
I feel sure with the mother attending regularly, this thrush will have the strength to fly away in just a few weeks... and my family and I are going to enjoy every moment of this rare opportunity to live with a bird without the use of a cage.
Our love to you all from the South of France!

such an awesome thing to witness and you even managed to get a few nice photos of her and the baby.
If you get time, stop by my place and check out the great time a turtle and I had when I found him trying to cross the road. It was a lot of fun and I think you of all people would enjoy it. How is the bird doing? Also, you said it is a thrush and that you guys eat them over there. Exactly how big does the grown bird get?
