Dinner time for Giant Petrels
When food presents itself down here in the Southern ocean there are a lot of predators/scavengers ready to pounce and feed at a moments notice. Here I was cruising around the South Orkney Islands when we found an Adelie penguin face down and not moving, which typically means it has recently died. How it died, I have no idea but would assume it could have been a potential heart attack due to be chased by a predator that was just toying with it.
Shortly after finding this poor little guy a flock of Giant Petrels flew down to begin feasting, which then becomes bit of a squabble fest, as they attempt to demonstrate their authority so they can eat as much as they can. You never know when and where you next meal will be down in this part of the world.
