hiding in the shallows

in #nature6 years ago

This cute little guy, also known as a Weddell Seal, is hiding in the shallows in an attempt from being detected by some predators that were close by on the Antarctic Peninsula. These animals are one of the main food sources for large type B orca in the waters that surround the peninsula, as they can be a tad docile and very chunky with lots of blubber, which is a perfect meal for an apex predator like Orca.

Besides being a potentially tasty meal for a predator these animals live year round along the continent of Antarctica using breathing holes that the males will maintain by using their teeth so the holes won't freeze over throughout the winter period. This does make them quite a remarkable creature and also is a reason why males don't have a long of a life span compared to the females, as their teeth will wear out faster due to them maintaining breathing holes in the winter. Females are known to live about 10 years longer than males - that is if they can continue to avoid being predated on whilst they are at sea foraging for fish in the deep waters that are close to the continent.
