First cloudberries (Rubus chamaemorus) of the year + meeting some ptarmigans in the mountain

in #nature6 years ago

The cloudberries (Rubus chamaemorus) are a type of fruit we have in Scandinavia, northern Russia, Canada, and Alaska. We typically call them a berry because they look almost like an orange raspberry, but they are in fact a fruit.

A ripe cloudberry.

We typically harvest them in the autumn, but yesterday my wife and I decided to go for a mountain hike with the dogs, and to our surprise we actually found a decent amount of ripe cloudberries. I have never really looked for them in July before, and they are typically not really harvested until August.

Anyway, cloudberries are really popular here in Norway, but they are also notoriously expensive if you buy them at the store. I think they sell for something like $30 per kilo, or some crazy amount like that. I'm not really sure, because if you are willing to hike for a few hours, then you can get as many as you could ever want for free.

Most of the cloudberries were still unripe yet, so we didn't get a chance to fill our freezer just yet, but it was enough to have a nice snack on our way to the mountain peak.

Most of these are unripe, but you can see two ripe ones in this photo.

Meeting a a few ptarmigans

On our way up we met a rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) that wanted to pose a bit for us. For some reason he didn't care that we looked at him 20 meters away!

We also saw a female willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) with five chicks, but she was not as willing to pose. I only have a camera with 55m lens, so I have to get really close to get a good shot of them, so unfortunately the pictures of her turned out a lot worse.

Two chicks in the upper left corner, and the mother in the lower right corner.

And by the way, if you want to pronounce ptarmigan, it's with a silent p, just like the pteradoctyl.

Some more photos of the hike

Wilma got surprisingly good camouflage when she's next to rocks!

There's still snow in some parts of the mountains. These areas that still have snow are shaded almost constantly.

We have a lot of free-ranging sheep in Norway. Farmers typically send their sheep up to the mountains in the spring or early summer, and bring them back down in the autumn. We meet a lot of these when going on hikes here.

Thanks for stopping by

Thanks for checking out my post about the cloudberries, and the hike I had yesterday. Let me know if you have any questions about any of the species in the photos, or want to know more about typical Norwegian hiking.

Wow! Amazing photography of cloudberry. I really loved your post.
Orange is my favourite color. Nice and brilliant content @valth.

Thanks for sharing this post.

Have a wonderful day! 🤗

Waooo... I have never had cloudberries... How do they taste???? ... And 30$ per kg is indeed steep.most fruits in my region cost around 0.2$ to 4$ per kg....
Its good to get such costly fruit for free, if you ask me...

Most fruit are also a lot cheaper here though. The thing about cloudberris is that you cannot grow it on a farm, but you must go pretty high up to the mountain to get them. And each plant can only make one fruit per year (they are the size of strawberries), so it takes a lot of effort to get a kg.

But they are really good. They taste kind of like cream made from milk honestly, but it's difficult to describe.

Awesome hike report @valth :) I never heard of that fruit and never seen that bird either. Thanks for providing these little insights into the renowned natural beauties of Norway.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it, @phortun. You should definitely try to find some of these berries if you ever end up in Norway ;)

Beautiful pictures. Allah can creat what He want no matter the season was in or out.I have never heard about cloud berries before I think you can enjoy them once more if you go there..they are looking in bunch like a flower.ptrmigans is a beautiful bird.

Congratulations @valth... I love StEeMiT... Very amazing nature photography post.. thank you so much my dear sir.. upvoted...

How beautiful scenery it is.
You have nice hiking and enjoy with nature. you meet and eat cloudberry, see ptarmigan etc. The nature looks very supportive of your journey. Wilma also seemed happy to take a walk. Can take pictures in nature. Can even find a place to camouflage.

But, why in the photo there is only Wilma? Where is the black puppy, what is his name? if not pity her at home ..
I hope you just not upload the picture.

Thanks. Yes, it was a very nice hike!

He was with us, but I didn't get any good photos of him. But he was with us, and he had a very nice time :)

So hiking is beneficial in your area not only health wise but as a reward you may get cloudberries. I would live to hike such tracks:P. Wilma is perfectly camouflaged in rocks. wow sheeps are also allowed to capture:P. Just kidding as you already meantioned. Have a nice time @valth

Yeah, it's very nice to both get berries and get healthy at the same time ;)

Vi satse på en god multesesong her i nord også. Etterhvert....😊

Hehe, jeg kan tenke meg at det er en liten stund igjen til det er modent der oppe i nord :)

The sheep are very cute,in second picture
the berries are looking as if they are flowers,
all the pictures are nice.

Thanks! Yeah, the sheep are really cute ;)

Beautiful places you have.
And for cloudberries a special thank you!
I've never seen them before.
We don't grow them.
I wish you new achievements and success.
Great photos! @valth

Best wishes from, @singa

Thank you. I don't think they are really possible to even grow commercially, so you need to go up in the mountains to get them :P
