Pigweed Flea Beetles

in #nature5 years ago

You can find Pigweed Flea Beetles feeding on plants of the Amaranth family from late spring through autumn. These two pigweed flea beetles are feeding on the pigweed plant.

The pigweed plant originates from North and South America and it produces flowers beginning in July. The small green flowers are on tall green spikes, which grow from the top of the plant.

The plant is called "pigweed" for a couple of reasons. It is considered a weed and one of the places it grows is on pastures where pigs are fed. These plants are also used to feed pigs at times.

No pigs here...just weeds in a garden.

Thanks for stopping by!

I'm gonna have to buy some pigs. :-)

Scary Mary might not like the pigs @manorvillemike lol.

I feel sorry for the pigs then. :-)

I love your photo and accompanying information!
Amaranth. None where I live, but I read a sci-fi novel in which scientists experiment with pesticides and amaranth resists everything and mutates to where it takes over the entire planet, causing many extinctions, and some humans turn green with photosynthesis to feed off the sun... "Botanicaust" by Tam Linsey. :)

Thanks for your kind words Carol. : )
I would have never thought there would be a sci-fi novel about Amaranth. Go figure! LOL!

Those bugs sure make for holy plants!

HaHa! No pun intended. LOL!
