Baby Romper - A Work In The Making

in #needleworkmonday6 years ago

Ha..choose the right yarn, and the right needle is one of my most frustrating chores! If you wonder why I said this, it is because most of the yarn I have on hands were from the Thrift Store, and the yarn had no labels on them.

What to do with this bit of yarn and the color is calling your name? I can't resist and just want to make something with it. So I went searching and looking for baby things to do.

My mind decided to do a baby romper, so that is what they called! And since the pattern has two colors, I thought it would be perfect! Using this bit of yarn with another bit of other yarn to make a romper would be a great gift for my soon to be here grandson.

I got the joke done! Still like it so far, so I continue on with the body! This is my first time trying to make a romper but I have so much hope that I would be able to get through all the technical part of the pattern.

Yup, this is the beginning of the body! Shells...looking good so far and the colors are great! I can't go wrong with white yarn.

I got this far, and I am starting to doubt it! It fans out and the shape looks like it is for a girl! It is not settling in my mind, because my son will say it is too girly for his first baby! Gosh, what to do, what to do? I will let this sit for now, and might replace it with another pattern...

Anyone made a romper before? Or can you tell me if this is too "Girly"?

Not me, that's for sure but you are making progress. Well done!

Thank you..

I hope you are going to post more of your work :)

Will do, thank you!

It is a little... frilly. But boys can be frilly when Grandma makes the romper.
It is really cute, maybe finish it and save it for a granddaughter?

Yes, I think I will do that, finish up and save for a girl or a granddaughter..Thank you!

Hi. It is really cute. But I think it's for a girl. I recommend, that the white color work as the blue dot, and so it would be for a child.

Thank you, but using blue yarn won't work, as the shell pattern seems to puff out in the body, and the yoke itself fans out too much..

I have to admit before I got to the end I thought you were making this for a baby girl. The shells in the pattern and how they flow makes it look girly. Maybe you can look for a pattern without the shells? I have never made a romper before so unfortunately I have no other advice. I know you’ll figure out what to do :)

However your stitch work is beautiful as always ~ 💜

Thank you @crosheille I will either find another pattern or work out the yoke somehow so it won't fan out like for a girl.

That’s great! Looking forward to seeing what you decide ;)

Well I have two sons and grew up with two brothers (and a much older sister) so I'm probably not a good one to ask if its too Girly. But hey you commented on my crypto-mining post so in my opinion too Girly haha

Ok, thank you!

Yes...it does seem girly. Have you searched ravelry.com? There are many nice free patterns there for baby boy rompers. That's where I found patterns for my grandsons. I do love your colors though!

Thank you @fiberartists and I will get on ravelry website today..

Your work is so neat and beautiful, and the mint yarn has a great stitch definition. But perhaps the colour combination and the flaring of the shells look a bit like a girl’s dress. For me this would be not important, but if you already know that your son want more “male” clothes, this could be a problem. Often people interpret brownish colours or darker blue tones as more “male”. And perhaps a less lacy stitch pattern would please your son more… But you know him best.
But nevertheless, you did great work and I hope you find a solution.

Yes, I agree! The shell pattern is all wrong for a "boyie" look and feel! Even the yoke is fanning out too much for my liking too. I am going to research some more for a different patter or stitches or pattern that will be more trim line to boyish than girly..Thank you for your input!

Pleasing others tastes is never easy.... :-D
I found this patterns for rompers on ravelry, they are more like little trousers

not sure if this helps...

Thank you so much..I am on it now :-)

I never did such projects. but I like the color of the yarn very much. I think that for a small child these subtleties (which color refers to which sex) do not play a big role :) but of course parents can have their opinion about it

Thank you! I believe this particular pattern isn't the right fit for a boy romper. The shells fan out way too much.
