“The days of communicating through gifs and memes, listening to our favourite remixes online or sharing videos of our friends singing at karaoke might be coming to an end.”

Memes could be soon be a thing in the past for everyone. EU is planning a copyright directive that might be approved later this month. This Directive will protect intellectual property rights of people that publish content online. Digital campaigners warn that this could "destroy the internet as we know it". This might be the death of memes because those memes as we know them are created from other people's original content, this includes photographs, music and videos.

European Commission spokesman said:

“The idea behind our copyright proposals is that people should be able to make a living from their creative ideas. The proposals to modernise EU copyright provisions will not harm freedom of expression on the internet.”

Sites will probably have to invest in filtering systems that will check the content posted and avoid publishing/showing the copyrighted content.

Here's an example I found on the internet, Kermit the Frog, when you share this meme, you have the Lipton drink from which you did not get an approve to use it, you have Kermit the Frog, and the person that took the photo. 3 copyright violations in one meme.

What do you think about this? Will the internet be destroyed? Will this allow big companies control our content even more? Will memes be safe on Steemit and can this help Steemit grow faster?

And don't forget! "One meme a day, keeps the doctor away!".
