Breaking: US Navy preparing to enter Black Sea as tensions rise between Russia, Ukraine
BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:00 P.M.) - The U.S. Navy is making preparations to enter the Black Sea's waters as tensions between Russia and Ukraine reach an all-time high over the recent detention of the Ukrainian sailors, a CNN report said on Wednesday.
According to the report, the U.S. military requested that the State Department notify Turkey about its potential plan to enter the Black Sea through the Bosphorus Strait.
CNN said that a State Department spokesman said, "the United States carries out its activities consistent with the terms of the Montreux Convention. We will not, however, comment on the nature of our diplomatic correspondence with the Government of Turkey."
Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy is making preparations ahead of the State Department's notifications as commander Kyle Raines told CNN, "our US 6th Fleet is always prepared to respond where called."
"We routinely conduct operations to advance security and stability throughout the US 6th Fleet area of operations to include the international waters and airspace of the Black Sea," Raines told CNN. "We reserve the right to operate freely in accordance with international laws and norms," he added.
On Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned that the Ukrainian military was preparing to launch a new operation in the disputed Donbass region.
The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova told reporters that the Kremlin believes that the Ukrainian military may use chemical weapons in Donbass.
