US-led coalition begin holding joint patrols in northern Syria
BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:15 A.M.) - US forces began holding patrols along the Syrian-Turkish border, footage filmed on Friday shows.
US military personnel and armoured vehicles can be seen patrolling the area near the northern Syrian city of Kobane.
In a statement released by the Combined Joint Task Force of Operation Inherent Resolve, British Maj. General Christopher Ghika said the patrols would ensure coalition forces' ability to work together to protect civilians and defeat Da'esh.
For their part, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense issued a statement saying the joint patrols would continue until the "end state" agreed in the Manbij Roadmap is reached.
Three months ago, the United States and Turkey made an agreement to hold joint patrols near Manbij in order to avoid more fighting in the area. Under the deal, Kurdish fighters were to withdraw from the city.
Turkish forces launched a new round of artillery attacks last weekend, as it seeks to crush Kurdish forces along the breadth of the border.
In response, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) whose main contingent is the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) brought their offensive against ISIS in Deir ez-Zor's Hajin pocket to a halt.
