US to re-focus campaign against IS in Afghanistan - Mattis

BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:00 P.M.) - US counter-terrorism forces have a chance to "focus elsewhere" in Afghanistan, against IS-affiliated groups, US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis said at a press conference in Brussels on Friday.

The chance is presented due to the Afghan government's planned Eid Al Fitr ceasefire with the Taliban.

"For example, should the Taliban take full advantage of the ceasefire in the best interest of the Afghan people, then many of the surveillance assets we have overhead could be reoriented to ISIS-K or Al-Qaeda and other foreign terrorists who have no business being in Afghanistan in the first place," Mattis said.
