Singapore Stories - Singapore to host US-North Korea summit

in #news6 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemians! It is confirmed that Singapore will be hosting the meetup between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The summit is targeted to be held on 12th June, about a month from now. A quick video on this event is provided below:

This is the Tweet from Donald Trump on this meetup and the corresponding reply from Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong:

Donald Trump: The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!

Lee Hsien Loong: The meeting between US President @realDonaldTrump & N.Korea leader Kim Jong Un is a significant step on the path to peace. May it lead to a successful outcome. – LHL

The official press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can be found here.

This is not the first time Singapore is selected as a neutral ground to host a summit between 2 leaders. In Nov 2015, Singapore also held the summit between Ma Ying-jeou, then president of the Republic of China (Taiwan; ROC), and Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President of the People's Republic of China. Some experts are now trying to guess which location will be used to hold the summit, with the following 3 locations being the most likely:

  • Shangri-la Hotel
  • MBS
  • Sentosa

Shangri-la Hotel seems to be the most likely as the summit between Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou was also held there. It is also the place where the annual IISS Shangri-la Dialogue is held.

The IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore is the most important regular gathering of defence professionals in the Asia-Pacific region, a vital annual fixture in the diaries of ministers and their civilian and military chiefs of staff. Since its launch in 2002 the Dialogue has built confidence and fostered practical security cooperation, by facilitating easy communication and fruitful contact among the region’s most important defence and security policymakers.

Personally, I am still quite skeptical on the sudden softening of attitude by Kim Jong Un. This is not the first time in history where the North Korean regime is considering denuclearization. In fact, they have agreed on several occasions in the past to denuclearize but failed to keep their promises.

Despite that, I do hope that the relationship between the two sides can be improved permanently with this meetup. What is your view on this event? And what do you think about Singapore being chosen to host this event?

This will be an interesting encounter. I think the Korean leader talks a lot and recently, while Trump generally does what he says.
It will be a meeting where the media will have a lot of material to generate information and will also lend itself to speculation. I hope that good results will be generated and the Korean leader will forget so many threats against EEUU and its allies.

Same here. I genuinely hope for long-lasting and permanent improvements on the relationship between the 2 countries. This will help reduce the political tension in the Korean peninsula.

Everything for the welfare and peace of the world.

I am not an expert when it comes to politics and stuff but I do not like Kim Jong Un that much - I mean, he killed his own family member (not himself but he wanted it to happen and made it happen - if I do not mix up anything).
Generally I do not like North Korea, this country is crazy af.; simply unhuman conditions over there (censorship, poverty,...).
And Donald Trump... well I think he is an idiot too somehow (eg. wall to protect USA from Mexico lol) but he did some good things too (France...), I think.

Long story short: Peace is ALWAYS good and better than war. So I am pretty happy as long as peace is kept/safeguarded.
And I hate nuclear weapons - well, weapons in general. Killing is not a beautiful thing.

Yea bro, peace is always better than war. Fully agree to that!

Another feather in the cap for 'The Little Red Dot? :-)

Haha.. I guess it will certainly be something that the Singapore government will be proud of. Not quite sure how the people on the ground will think though.

Sometimes, people don't appreciate what they have until they lost it. There are only positives in this event right? Or is this simpleton missing something? :-)

I hope the meeting will be smooth going. Upvoted!

Yup, I hope so too!

i wonder if those on reservist/mobilisation might be affected on those dates ><

My friend NSman police already kenna reservist. Lol... And I think folks in MFA and other Home team services will also be quite busy.

It’s funny and strange to me that leaders nowadays use social media, like Twitter, to announce their next moves or inform people about serious issues.
I would like to live the day that a political leader will become a member of Steemit and use it to make an important announcement!
Does anyone know any politician who is also a Steemian?

Haha.. I guess the trend is set by Donald Trump, who is an avid user of Twitter. Although Singapore's Prime Minister also uses social media rather regularly, he still chooses official channels for most important announcements.
