Campus Police Kill Navy Vet Who Was Trying To Break Up A Fight
The Portland State University police recently killed a man who witnesses claim was only attempting to break up a fight. As he was intervening in the fight, it's alleged that his weapon (for which he had a conceal-carry permit) fell out and as he was attempting to retrieve that weapon it's alleged that officers shot and killed him.
The victim, Jason Washington, was a Navy vet, married, and a father of 3 children.
A Push To Disarm Campus Police
The officers that were involved have already been placed on leave.
It's quite the turnaround from the days when students and college presidents were lobbying for the creation of their own police departments. Colleges around the country need to deal with a variety of crime and they have an interest to protect their property and the thousands of students that attend the school etc. They thought it might be better to have their own community officers rather than rely on local police to get the job done. And now you can find many private and public institutions that have embraced establishing their own security force. Maybe the issue isn't that they are armed, maybe the issue might be that some of them think that they can use excessive force without fear of any punishment?

Yes, not everything is so smooth .. In Ukraine, too, the police violates sometimes, exceeding their authority. Probably this is everywhere.
How sad that this innocent person has taken his life in that way is a great loss, he feels powerless now I leave 3 children, this should not go unpunished, that is what the vast majority of the police do besides that they are some corrupt
Another victim of the use of firearms, I do not know if the solution is to disarm the school guards, it seems to me that this goes further, I believe that we must continue trying to get all citizens to hand over their weapons and a law stronger against the agencies that propose the sales of firearms.

Another victim of the use of firearms? I think you mean another victim of the many abuses of power by police and uniformed agents of the State.
Guns should be kept away from unstable and/or dangerous people, which includes cops and agents of the State. If a civilian shoots and kills an innocent person that's bad and something we shouldn't want in society, but giving a free pass to cops who shoot and kill innocent people daily is also bad and something we shouldn't want or tolerate in society. Evil is evil regardless of who does it. People shouldn't get away with murder just because they wear a badge and uniform.
But sure, keep calling for your own disarmament. While people like you beg the government to disarm the citizenry the government is giving more and more military equipment and training to more and more government agencies to enforce more and more laws using threats of force and violence against the people. Soon the government will have a true monopoly on violence.
But you can totally trust the government to always do the right thing and protect you and your rights (hah!).

another incident of trigger happy police officers.thought they are trained in this kind of situation but looks like they are not.what a disgrace.
I agree with you. I add, one thing is disarming a police department; another is arm control for the rest of the population. I think that a university police department should be armed and be specialized in protecting students from criminals (external and internal) and trained to be very tactful and prudent during their practice.

I think officers could benefit greatly from some value of life training- some teachings as to the wisdom of the golden rule - there needs to be more rigorous testing and only those who can keep their cool in high stress situations get hired. Tragedy.
