When one thinks of Disney, chances are they will first think of Mickey Mouse. With his white gloves, yellow shoes and red shorts, he is one of the world's most recognizable characters.

Mickey made his debut in the animated short film "Plane Crazy." It was a silent film and given a test screening to a theater audience on this date. However, distributors didn't pick it up. Later in this year, the first sound cartoon with Mickey, called Steamboat Willie, would become an enormous success. And that is just the beginning of it all.

Now, Mickey is everywhere. He has appeared in over 130 films, has been in comic strips and even appeared in a video game, "Epic Mickey." Of course, you can always catch the mascot at Disney Parks. He is also the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

On this day, one of the greatest baseball feats, that still is intact to this very day, began. This was a 56 game hit streak recorded by Joe DiMaggio.

DiMaggio began the hit streak on this date by batting 1 for 4 against the Chicago White Sox and their pitcher Eddie Smith. From there, DiMaggio would get at least one hit every game. As he approached the current (at that time) record of 41 games, coverage of his streak was a dime a dozen.

On July 17th, his streak would finally be snapped. During the streak, DiMaggio batter with a .408 average and recorded 15 home runs and 55 RBIs.

The idea of same-sex marriage has been, and will most likely continue to be a heavily-debated topic, stemming from the idea of somebody's religion or upbringing versus a changing view on the world and acceptance of all types of people. So when California, the most populous state in the U.S. legalized it, the uproar was astounding.

The legalization involved the ruling of the previous ban to be unconstitutional, as it subjected different treatment to others based on sexual orientation. The legalization was passed by a 4-3 vote by the California Supreme Court.

Before California, Massachusetts was the only state to have legalized it, in 2004. Currently, there are 13 states in the United States who still disallow it.
