Largest Elephant Massacre in African History

"Each day we are counting dead elephants and the scale of elephant poaching is by far the largest I have seen or read about in Africa to date" said Mike Chase, Director of Elephants Without Borders, a Botswana Charity after they have counted atleast 87 Elephant carcasses during a three month census of the animals population in the country.

To take note is the fact that this elephant massacre comes after the Botswanian Government had disarmed park rangers, thus created a leeway for increased poaching for ivory tusks which are in high demand in the Asian markets. An ivory tusk sells at roughly $1000 per kilo and this explains why the poaching of this endangered species is increasing, thus driving the species to the brink of extinction.

Should we just fold our arms, sit and watch how elephants get massacred? No! We can make a change. You can start by learning about elephants and the role in they play in the ecosystem, supporting a Biodiversity conservation organization such as @thegreens, @kedjom-keku and @treeplanter, supporting an Elephant Conservation organization or learning about the things you can do to stop species from becoming extinct: https://steemit.com/steemiteducation/@biodiversity/things-you-can-do-to-save-species-from-becoming-extinct

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

sky5.jpg

UNEP

Sunday 16 September 2018 was commemorated World Wide as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer under the theme “Keep Cool and Carry On: The Montreal Protocol”
The ozone layer is a fragile shield of gas that protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping to preserve life on the planet.

Ozone is a special form of oxygen with the chemical formula O3 and it constitutes a very small part of our atmosphere, but its presence is nevertheless vital to human well-being. It resides between 10 and 40km above Earth's surface in the stratosphere. Discovered in 1985, the Ozone hole is has become a global symbol of an environmental threat that has helped mobilize public support for the Montreal Protocol.

But what caused the hole in the sky?

Over the past 60 years human activity has greatly contributed to the deterioration of the ozone layer via the use of Ozone Depleting Substances such as Aerosols, Sterilants, Carbon Tetrachloride, Foams, HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), Methyl bromide, Solvents, Coatings and Adhesives.

This year’s World Ozone Day is calling on all of us to carry on with the exemplary work of protecting the ozone layer and the climate. It calls on us to;
• Protect ourselves from ozone layer depletion by avoiding excessive sun exposure, and
• Take care of our appliances to minimize ozone layer impact.

Read and disseminate the UN Secretary-General's message on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer:

This has been a year of record-breaking heat around the world. It is also a pivotal time for climate action.
As we address this threat, we can draw inspiration from the Montreal Protocol, a shining example of how the world can come together for people and planet.
When science showed us that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other substances were tearing a hole in the ozone layer that protects all life on earth, the world responded with determination and foresight by banning them. Thanks to this global commitment, the ozone layer is expected to return to its 1980 levels by mid-century.
However, this work is not yet done.
The landmark Kigali Amendment, which enters into force on 1 January 2019, sets its sights on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful climate-warming gases still used in cooling systems.
So far, 46 countries have ratified this new instrument; I call on all others to follow suit and show their commitment to a healthier planet. I expect countries to demonstrate significant progress in implementing the Kigali Amendment at the Climate Summit I am convening in September 2019.
For over three decades, the Montreal Protocol has done much more than shrink the ozone hole; it has shown us how environmental governance can respond to science, and how countries can come together to address a shared vulnerability.
I call for that same spirit of common cause and, especially, greater leadership as we strive to implement the Paris Agreement on climate change and mobilize the ambitious climate action we so urgently need at this time.

2018 World Rhino Day

World Rhino Day

World Rhino Day is on September 22 and this year's Rhino Day celebrates all five species of rhino: Black, white, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan rhinos.

Did you know the Javan Rhino is among the Seven endangered species that could (almost) fit in a single train carriage?

The Guardian

There are almost 29, 500 Rhinos in the World today but Two-thirds of the world’s five rhino species could be lost in our lifetime. Poaching, habitat loss, and factors ranging from inbreeding to invasive species are driving Africa’s black rhino and Indonesia’s Sumatran and Javan rhinos to the brink of extinction. Africa’s white rhino and India and Nepal’s greater one-horned rhino are also endangered and their survival still remains dependant on vigilant protection, monitoring, and management.

“This year, we’re at a critical point for rhinos. We must do what it takes to ensure they survive, or we will start losing species,” said Dr. Susie Ellis, executive director of the International Rhino Foundation. “Protecting the five species in range countries, cracking down on poaching,, dealing with governmental corruption, stopping the demand for rhino horn, and securing habitats is the way forward.”

Organic Farming can save Bees and other pollinators

An extensive 3-year study from Lund University in Sweden has found that organic farming methods can contribute to halting the pollinator decline. This beneficial effect is due to both the absence of insecticides and a higher provision of flower resources.
Pollinating insects are endangered globally and have witnessed a steep decline over the last 40 years due to our unsustainable lifestyles.

The 3-year field experiment, conducted by researchers from the Centre for Environmental and Climate (CEC) Research at Lund University, found that the number of bumblebee species in organic farms was higher and more stable over time and space than in conventional farms.
"This is the first large-scale study over the course of several years to show that organic farming has a consistent, stabilizing effect on pollinator diversity ," says Romain Carrié, a postdoctoral researcher at CEC.

This explains why @greennews strives to promote the efforts of @homesteaders because they are greatly contributing to species proliferation and greatly improving the health and wellbeing of people and the planet.
