This picture in today's newspaper Dawn is enough to explain the condition of sewerage in mega metropolitan city of Karachi.
The reason behind all this mayhem are choked sewers through the city which are choked with garbage as the city is fully littered in garbage too, second reason for this are encroachment on city's drain like the Gujjar Nala and other such drains passing thru the city but could not be cleaned because of huge encroachments on such places,
third reason is the conversion of residential areas into commercial areas without proper upgradation of services such as changing old sewer lines with new and big diameter pipes which could carry the load of enhanced population.
The last but not the least to mention is the usurping of powers of Mayor, SBCA, KDA, KMC officials and putting them under the local bodies minister. After passing of 18th. Amendment the amendment envisage devolution of power to grassroot level not by usurping them.
The claimants and architects of this amendment the PPP itself are the one's who had rolled back the amendment by confiscating the powers of the institutions.
In democracy the institutions are made powerful not the person likewise in dictatorship the person acts as power and weaken the institutions, so what should we call this act of PPP a democracy or civilian dictatorship like their founding leader ZAB who declared himself a civilian martial law administrator and ruled with authority by weakening institutions, same goes on even after 4 decades in this province.
How to expect any betterment in future if we continue to elect such mindsets to rule and confiscate the rights of the people.
I would now request the honourable minister local bodies to walk pass barefoot from this lane and show the residents how to manage such situations with courage.
