The Problem with Separating Children From their Parents

in #news6 years ago (edited)

I try not to get too political, but this is something I feel steongly about. Recently the US implemented a zero tolerance policy for illegal immigrants coming across the border. They started separating children from parents. The courts ordered the government had tonstop separating children but we are seeing the problems from this policy now. The government can't find all the parents to reunite children with.

I have heard the argument that this is what happens when people are arrested in the US, but there are problems with that argument.

  1. Most illegal immigrants are given a $10 fine and sentenced to time served. There is no way US citizens would have their children taken away for such a minor crime.

  2. The children and parents in the US have social security numbers and contact info. It is much easier to reunite citizens than illegal immigrants.

  3. Most citizens have friends or family who can take their children when they get arrested. It is rare that children are detained because the parents are arrested.

  4. People also say the illegal immigrants should know this would happen. How? The US is not going out if its way to tell other countries. Many people crossing the border don't have access to US news. Even if they do know about it staying in their home country is worse. "Border Crossers Willing to Risk US Apprehension Rather than Facing Death in Home Countries".

If people are worried about illegal immigrants coming to the US and committing crimes this policy makes it worse. Most criminals have issues. Many of those issues come from childhood trauma. Trauma like being separated from your parents in a strange country with no idea what is going on. This policy is creating criminals and ruining lives. Many of these children get stuck in the US detention system if they act up at all. So we are creating criminals who will stay in the US.

Finally this is clogging the court system and costing the US billions. 60 percent of all crimes in the court system involve immigration.

Not sure I could handle that!

That they admit too.

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

It should be argument instead of arguement.

if you are a us citizen then why are you illegally and criminally crossing into the US with your children instead of just going through the port of entry?

Many of your assumptions are just wrong. How can you collect a fine from a broke immigrant you send back to their home country? Illegally crossing the border is a serious crime.

American children are seperated from family members for simply not paying a parking ticket, being poor or using marijuana in America every day. Why aren't people addressing this as well?

They collect a fine before they send them back. I am not assuming anything, that is the punishment for many illegal immigrants. If you don't like the punishment and think it should be worse, that is another subject. You can't claim my assumptions are wrong because you don't like the facts.

Show me proof where children are separated for parking tickets.

If a person cannot feed or take care of their child, yes they could be taken after a very long investigation and court process for the child's safety. That is not the same as being poor. I would also love to see how many children are taken away for marijuana.

You avoid the main point which is that children of US citizens are not taken away for minor crimes that would involve a $10 fine and no jail time. it simply does not happen.

Really? If the parent goes to jail for not paying a parking ticket, it is by default they are separated from their children. This does not require critical nor deep thought.

I am saying your use of the fine amount for illegally crossing the border does not represent the severity of the crime.

If you charge them more and hold them until they pay( and probably cannot), you waste taxpayer money. It costs around $60-90( this is only the federal portion) a day to house someone in jail. This is also why giving them a jail sentence is not part of the punishment.

You don't go to jail for parking tickets. Look it up. Doing some research does not require critical or deep thought either.

So they aren't held in jail, but are still separated from their children? Why?

Wow, you do if you don't pay them( which is actually what I said). Look it up! Where were you born?

I did look it up and in almost every case you do not go to jail for parking tickets. You could get your license suspended for not paying them and if you drive with a suspended license you could go to jail, but it is really rare to go to jail just for parking tickets even if you don't pay them.

If you cannot even understand my clear statement, then you most definitely cannot be trusted to give an accurate analysis of other situations you obviously do not understand.

Your emotions should not guide you.

You keep talking in circles to avoid the question. If the illegal immigrants are not sent to jail, why should the children be separated from them? It is pretty obvious you don't have an answer.

A bench warrant = going to jail until you see a judge and a further jail sentence can be added to cover your fine...

They aren't held in jail, because it costs too much, so warehousing them is cheaper and they aren't required by law to keep them in better accomodations. They are criminals, which do not pay taxes, so aren't to benefit from taxpayer money.😀

So why separate them from their kids? Technicaly isn't everyone presumed inoocent until found guilty in court?
