[News] Worrying EU Copyright Directive Rejected By European Parliament

in #news6 years ago

The Copyright Directive, a controversial new proposed law, has been rejected in its current form by the European Parliament by 318 votes to 278, with 31 abstentions. The directive contained three articles that many saw as deeply concerning;

  • Article Three which covered data mining and who was allowed to do it
  • Article Eleven which covered the "link tax"
  • Article Thirteen which covered the "upload filter"

Article Eleven was favoured by news organisations who feel that news aggregator sites are unfairly profiting or people are getting their information from the small amount of text and not actually clicking. Article Thirteen was widely seen as an attack on fair use and in particular the so-called "meme economy".

Some of the biggest opponents to the Copyright Directive included the EFF, wikimedia and Mozilla Foundation while musicians and in particular the BPI, which is the British recorded music industry's trade association. Both sides have spent a lot of time and resources lobbying this matter, with copyright holders saying that internet firms and individual websites need to do more to ensure that the laws are strongly enforced.

The proposal has been seen by many as another attempt at censoring the internet, and I do understand the need for something to be done about the situation. We are seeing it happen here on Steemit on a daily basis, and so few people seem to really care. If we are caught with our heads down on these matters, and the same can be said for the recent Net Neutrality attack in the US, then we will lose something that is truly amazing; a free and open internet.

However the bill is not dead, as it has just been tabled until September because some MEPs were unhappy that the directive hadn't been openly debated. It isn't only the MEPs who seemed to fail to understand what this new legislation was all about, as many EU citizens have reported that they do not understand what it is all about. I think the fact that the FIFA World Cup is happening probably had something to do with that as most people here are distracted.

What do you think about the Copyright Directive? Do you think something does need to be done to curb copyright infringement? Let me know your thoughts and feelings down in the comments section, and as always make sure to follow me for the latest Technology, Internet and Pop Culture updates. Until next time guys, take it easy!
