WHAAAAAAAT!!!!?!?!?!?!?!
That was my reaction when I read this could possibly happen yesterday Reported by Bloomberg
That was my reaction. I wake this morning to see it's real. Microsoft Announcement
I honestly don't know how to feel about this. Coworkers are actually threatening to ditch git
altogether. I think that is a bit extreme. However, I do not think it's extreme to be concerned that now M$ has all my code. (Actually, you never know what M$ has of yours anymore anyway because it's not like software is broadcasting whether it's on the azure platform or not.) I'm hoping it will be good though.
I didn't want this post to be an Apple v. Microsoft post, but ... Under Steve Ballmer, Microsoft was overtly against OSS and Linux. Nadella has made a complete 180 in this respect and Microsoft has been feeling the love. I have used a Mac now largely because of being built on BSD and how easy it is to run software built for unix-like systems. Recently, Nadella introduced the linux subsystem to Windows (in the anniversary edition) which has dramatically altered my perspective here. OS X is not the front runner anymore. I have to admit the tide has shifted. If I can get some good hardware to run Windows on (like what Apple has done with its macbook pro and imac pro lines), I could be up to switching to windows. I know, this is a shock for many because I have been hardcore against Windows since Windows 2.0. Basically, the beginning. I have never used windows as a desktop environment personally or professionally. I say this to explain just how much of a change this would be for me.
To get back to the original point, this is indicative of Microsoft's change in perspective:
- Focus open source
- Containerization and cloud orchestration (Azure + k8s)
- Cloud development (github)
- Cloud content
They're poising to take on Openshift in a big way.
Microsoft will turn it to shit like they did Skype. Whatever.
Yeah. That's a possibility. It would be nice if they did what Salesforce did with Heroku. Just let them continue operating as a separate entity. ^_^
