NewsTech : "Microsoft buys Github code-sharing site for $7.5bn (£5.6bn)"

Microsoft is now one of the largest contributors to GitHub.

GitHub is popular with developers and companies, it is an online platform that allows coders to collaborate with each other on their work.

GitHub provides an open source database for coders currently used by 28m developers to share their code, who in turn represent more than 1.5 million organizations across a range of industries. The site allows others to make amends and improve it, potentially creating new features or services.

The vast majority of GitHub’s users access the site for free, with the trade-off being that the code they share must remain public. Users can pay for private accounts, while larger companies can pay more for the ability to host GitHub’s platform on their own private servers.

It is home to more than 85 million code sets used by people in nearly every country, some of which will include the work of engineers and developers at rival technology firms.

Microsoft announced that they bought the code repository GitHub for $7.5bn (£5.6bn).
