Padres’ Jose Torres suspended 100 games for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy

He’ll miss the remainder of the season.

Padres relief pitcher Jose Torres has been suspended 100 games by MLB for violating the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. That means he will miss the remainder of the season, and won’t be paid.

The suspension stems from an incident in December at the home of him and his wife in Phoenix, later reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune as involving a semiautomatic handgun. As the Union-Tribune reported, “Torres was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage and making threats or intimidation.”

At the time of the report, the Padres placed Torres on the restricted list and said,

“We are aware of the allegations involving Jose Torres, and he will not be reporting to spring training. We take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with the investigation being conducted by the Commissioner’s Office. We will not have any further comment at this time.”

He’s been on the restricted list since that time and he won’t be appealing the suspension, which is retroactive to June 5th.

In a new statement, the Padres said they “support the league’s efforts to educate players and prevent instances like this from occurring in the future.”

Torres pleaded guilty to some charges in March, and was scheduled to go on trial on the rest of them in July and August. It’s unclear whether the case was settled out of court or whether this is a rare case of the league deciding to mete out punishment before a case has been resolved.

Torres did pitch for the Padres in 2017, but as this is a domestic violence situation his career statistics are not super important right now. You can search those out at your leisure.
