After the tragedy that shook the Al-Noor Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, the time has come for answers. One of them may well be the use of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to ensure public safety.

The New Zealand place of worship, where an anti-Islamic extremist terrorist opened fire and killed 50 people and wounded 50 others a few weeks ago, will soon install an active shooter detection platform based on artificial intelligence. The equipment is being installed as part of a larger effort called the Keep Mosques Safe (KMS) initiative, launched by Fahad Al-Ameri, President and CEO of Qatari society Al-Ameri International, after the Christchurch shooting.

“The mass shooting at the Al-Noor Mosque was an unspeakable tragedy that no community should have to suffer,” Athena Security co-founder Lisa Falzone said in a press release. “The Keep Mosques Safe initiative is an important step in giving mosques the tools to better protect themselves from extremist individuals that wish to do them harm, so we can help prevent horrific events like this in the future.”

A system that has already proven itself

The security company presents its AI-powered gun detection security platform as a quick and accurate active shooter detection tool. It must, according to his leadership, alert law enforcement before shots are fired. It should be noted that this solution is already being used in various public places and schools, whether in Oceania or North America.

The company set out to create a computer-based vision algorithm that monitors cameras without reporting too many false positives, correcting one of the weak points so far. Athena's system is powered by the NVIDIA 2080 RTX graphics card and can be integrated into current camera security networks. In addition to schools, the company is marketing its solution to retailers.

“It gives us a great honor to have created such an initiative that aims to protect innocent worshippers, men, women and children in the houses of worship. After the tragic attack in the Al-Noor Mosque, I reached out to pay my condolences to Brother Shagaf Khan, the president of the Muslim Association of Canterbury as many had done. But, I was also committed to help support the New Zealand Islamic Community and the search started to reach an intelligent system that could help prevent such incidents happening again," Fahad Al-Ameri said about this new initiative, which will hopefully help prevent new bloodsheds similar to those in Christchurch.
