in #news5 years ago

Rumours about Apple's arrival in autonomous cars are not about to diminish. Even less so when Cupertino looks at a specialist in the sector, in this case Drive.ai.

According to The Information, and Bloomberg, Apple would be in advanced discussions with Drive.ai for the takeover of the company.

This specialist in autonomous cars, which currently produces shuttles, would have cash flow problems. Neither party wanted to react to information about their talks, but the deal could be around $200 million, according to Gene Munster, Apple's analyst at Loup Ventures.

Apple's interest in autonomous cars has been widely documented for several years. While the "Titan" project, which planned for an autonomous car, does seem to have been buried, the company with the apple bite does not seem to have abandoned the development of an OS for autonomous cars.

Thus, the possible acquisition of Drive.ai followed the recruitment of Michael Schwekutsch, Tesla's expert in electric motors.

An Apple OS for autonomous cars in four years?

The Information article discusses a type of purchase that would exclude Drive.ai's patents. And for good reason, in many areas, Apple would be ahead of the start-up created in 2015.

On the other hand, this acquisition would enable Cupertino to recruit some highly talented engineers, particularly those in charge of neural networks integrated into the autonomous shuttle control software.

Still according to Gene Munster, even if Apple managed to get its hands on Drive.ai, its OS should not come out for at least four years.
