AFRICAN MUSIC: Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense by Fela Kuti
Acclaimed as the father of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti is one of the greatest musicians to have come out of Africa. Fela was no ordinary musician, he was an activist and prophet who believed that music, during his time, ought not to be for enjoyment but for revolution.
Although Fela was not too popular in the West during his lifetime, his music would receive global recognition after his death. Fela spoke to the African people; Fela spoke to the world; Fela spoke to himself. Fela was a Messiah in his own right.
In Coffin for the Head of State, Fela satirizes religious institutions for using religion to exploit worshippers. Fela also exposes the hypocrisy of political office holders who use the name of religion to manipulate members of the public. I trust you will not only find the musicality of this song desirable but also the passionate message it delivers.
