To Osakpolor - The General in the Making
Osakpolor, we met in the first quarter of 2012 or thereabouts. The place was the famous Hall IV at the University of Benin. You were my roommate. Then, I was a final year student while you were an innocent freshman.
In the company of my friend SAA Wilson and other roommates like Gunn and Emmanuel, we would orientate you and other freshmen on how to survive the storm of Uniben. Sometimes, we would cook beans and everyone would merrily eat. I remember a few occasions when you went to town and returned with spicy pots of soup - which you gladly shared with us.
You were flawlessly humble and loyal. And your passion for academics was peerless. I remembered you telling us that you had passion for the military and would apply for an admission into NDA the following year.
And you kept your dreams alive, for you indeed secured an admission into NDA. Amidst the tortuous trainings and drillings, defiling the regimented life and transcending the valley of the shadow of death, you stood tall and shoulders high to conquer. Today, you're now commissioned into the Nigerian Navy. Congratulations!
I have no doubts about your exploits and the glory that awaits you in the years to come. However, do not forget that the uniform intoxicates like liquor and the greatest strength of a soldier does not lie in the trigger of his guns but in his ability to not allow his uniform think for him.
On a final note, I congratulate you and your family and everyone whose prayers and support have kept you through the long years at the NDA. Congratulations!
