Now Playing: Week 58 - The Two Murders Of Sam Cooke

in #nowplaying5 years ago (edited)

Originally written and recorded by Sam Cooke, "A Change Is Gonna Come" is as relevant today, sadly, as when it was first written becoming an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement.

It is widely considered Cooke's best composition. Over the years, the song has garnered significant praise and, in 2005, was voted number 12 by representatives of the music industry and press in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

I just watched Remastered: The Two Killings Of Sam Cooke on Netfilx which shows how much of a hero he was and how his outspoken views on the civil rights movement drew attention that may have contributed to his death.

He's one of my heroes and musical inspirations who's soul has touched millions of people. "A Change Is Gonna Come" has bee recorded by everyone from Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Fugees, Seal, Tina Turner, The Neville Brothers, and Bobby Womack.

Samuel Cook (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur.

Influential as both a singer and composer, he is commonly known as the King of Soul for his distinctive vocals and importance within popular music. He began singing as a child and joined The Soul Stirrers before moving to a solo career where he scored a string of hit songs like "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Wonderful World", "Chain Gang", "Twistin' the Night Away", and "Bring it on Home to Me".

His pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown. AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".

On December 11, 1964, at the age of 33, Cooke was shot and killed by Bertha Franklin, the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles, California. After an inquest, the courts ruled Cooke's death to be a justifiable homicide. Since that time, the circumstances of his death have been called into question by Cooke's family. source

I agree that Cooke was a very gifted singer; but, as many a celeb, lost touch with the reality of things. He was a black man living in a white man's world, breaking all the rules of that time.

Fast living and fast cars have caused many a man (and woman for that matter) more woes than worth...jmho...But, I digress...

It's a bit belated; but Happy New Year! Well, it is the Chinese New Year...found out today that I was born in the year of the Monkey...
Ha!

Peace.
