Colorful portrait-process and detailed description

in #ntopaz5 years ago (edited)

ntopaz-image-0This is my newest digital portrait and unlike my other artworks i have taken a different approach to this one. usually i would draw with only pencil on paper or completely digitally.
i think i have mentioned that i use a non display graphic tablet to paint. i have also mentioned that sketching on a non display tablet is really painfull and takes a lot of time.
an artist on facebook suggested that if thats the case then i shoup sketch traditionally and then transfer the sketch to photoshop and paint over it.
thats what i tried today. first i made the sketch on paper and then i took a picture of it, i edited the color to make white more white and dark more dark to get a better view and then put it in photoshop and then painted over it.
it did save a lot of time. usually creating a sketch from scratch on photoshop would take an hour or more, traditionally it takes me half an hour. although i would very much like to have a display tablet so i can do all of it digitally.

here are the process shots and description of how i did it.

first, i start with placing my photo of the sketch that i made on my sketchbook into photoshop. i hammered with it a little bit to make the white space whiter and dark lines darker. so it can be easier to paint over.

then i block in some colors in different layers, so i can use clipping mask to paint on my desired layers, without messing up other parts.

then i start putting darker colors on the skin.

after figuring out some shapes, i focus on the eyes. i paint the eyes with as little time as possible. because later i will add more details and see if things went my way.
Screenshot (563).png

i also put some flat colors on the lip and try to figure out the color of the nose and where how dark things should be.
Screenshot (564).png

using the color dodging and linear dodging brush i add highlights. one side of the face catches a lots of light, that it looks almost white. but i need to make sure its not white and that there is some glow.

i put some shades on the lips and work on the nose a little more.

for the next few photos, i try adding more details and blend the colors throughout the face so they are evenly distributed and looks good.
while doing this i also worked on the teeth a little bit.

here, i started working on the neck

now i start working on the hair. first i add the brightest color on it, because the hair will catch a lots of light and will have a lots of shine on it.

after working on the hair i move on to the clothing. and add a bit of color there. i also put some random colored background to make the portrait pop. i have also added some textures on the face to make it look more real.

This is what i end up with.

Like you, I also have a tablet without a screen and yes, it is true, the first few months it was very difficult for me to make lines or sketches directly with my tablet in Ps but after so much practice I think it is easier for me, even I have improved a lot in my lines and the sketches can be done quietly from my tablet... I think that with much practice in the end the same thing will happen to you, I am sure. ;)

I like your portrait, it is a young face with very sharp features and its hair that is the same as mine, I love lol. the only thing is that I think you used a lot of blur ... from the rest, you did a nice job. <3 <3 <3

Portrait as an art, it is so intensive ~ Faintly red, dimly purple ~ Strong eye shows how impressive it is ~

Well done. That's impressive. I wish ed I had a eye so sharp.
