The establishment of the Mint at Batu Tiga, Shah Alam is a great history for Malaysia as well as Malaysia's numismatic world. Its establishment on July 10, 1971 marked the beginning of Malaysia's own coin made in the country compared to previously, Malaysian coins made abroad.

The inauguration ceremony was made by Finance Minister then, Tun Tan Siew Sin. The opening ceremony was also attended by Bank Negara Governor, Tan Sri Ismail bin Mohamad Ali and other special guests.

The monetary building was originally a Bank Negara currency office. The Batu Tiga Currency Office opened officially on March 13, 1967, and has a 6,000 square foot space.

In 1969, Bank Negara Malaysia had advertised vacancies for the Mint Manager with the required qualification of Honors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, 3 years of experience in the production engineering field and knowing practical knowledge of the machine. The initial salary at that time was in the range of $ 1,300 to $ 1,450 a month.

The Batu Tiga Currency Office was later renovated into a Mint with the advice of foreign experts. To facilitate the implementation of this plant's planning, the bank has also established a special position to address the problems arising from the recruitment, training, and selection of the equipment required by the plant.

The Monetary Manager and his staff were sent to several overseas Mint to get training among them at Hamburg Mint, Germany; Royal Mint, London and Bradbury Wilkinson.

As an experiment, the plant has successfully issued its first coin as scheduled on 1st May 1971. At that time, the plant was able to produce 70 million coins per year.

The plant was set up at a cost of $ 1.6million (machine only) and its construction was assisted by Hamburg Central Bank, West Germany in terms of technical advice and training to the Mine's staff. It involves training for Mint Managers, Production Supervisors, 3 Foremen, 2 Fitters, and 2 Makers.

During the inauguration of the Mint Factory, Tun Tan Siew Sin stated, "the coinage issue for some other countries is a treasury right but the matter is handed over to the National Bank. This is because the good records of the Central Bank are in financial matters."

Tan Sri Ismail Ismail in his speech has outlined a brief overview of the history of the National Bank. He explained, "The Central Bank of Malaysia has just taken the money issue right four years, at which time all the country's money was made overseas, but for the past three years the measures taken for the Central Bank are self-financing coin thanks to the Federal Government of the Republic of Germany for helping train the mint staff in Hamburg. "

In 1974, the Mills added 4 more coin-operated machines at a cost of $ 175,000 each. The move is aimed at addressing the shortage of coinage in Penang and Ipoh.
