Who I liked in the 90s you never heard of

in #oddball1980s6 years ago

One of my favorite obscure players for the 1990s was cubs mega prospect Gary Scott. The guy hit like .400 in the spring and everyone thought he was the answer finally to Ron Santo. They were wrong, he was out of the league within 5 years having one supernatural spring training and that was it unfortunately for the cubs faithful.

A few obscure baseball talents during this time that very few people remember during this time are the Perez brothers, Melido and Pascual, and then Carlos in the later 90's early 2000s. All were excellent pitchers, both were very animated, and both had some off field issues that apparently hampered their very solid careers.

You got a 33.33% upvote from @payforplay! Please consider delegating steem power to @payforplay. We are currently sharing 100% of our profits with our delegators. That's correct, 100%! It doesn't get better than that. It is essentially running your own bid bot without doing any of the work. Steem power can be delegated here: https://steembottracker.com/delegation.html

Another really cool one was Vance Law, played for the Expos cubs pirates, all over. Really slick 3b.

Maybe the ultimate Cub obscure player that broke in was 1990 with Hector Villanueva. Monster mashing catcher that caught fire when he first started then may have eaten himself out of the game due to the cubs having a pretty good first baseman at that time being Mark Grace.

Another favorite from the 1990s that was less heralded but a guy I liked was Glenallen Hill. That dude was a monster and hit that homerun on top of the building in left center at Wrigley, that has to be the furthest hit ball I have ever seen in mlb to this day.

What about Rick Wrona for the Cubs? He hit like 30 homers one year, and then makes some money, kicks it around for a lengthy career as a journeyman after that.

Great post!

And who can forget the electric all world phenom to be that never panned out Brien Taylor for the Yankees? He was Jon Lester, David Price, Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale rolled into one 15 years earlier.

Another guy that was a huge prospect for the Yankees and fizzled was Kevin Maas. I remember his baseball cards were worth a ton at one point because he hit like 12 homers in his first 100 or so at bats, just a crazy number, then he fizzled out the next few years and eventually was out of baseball.

Another guy that was fun was fun to watch develop from obscurity was one hit wonder Francisco Cabrera for Atlanta. I must have had 1000 of his baseball cards, it seemed as though I got one in every pack. He had that hit that scored Sid Bream and got the Braves to the 1991 World Series then became a folk legend, and had nothing else really remarkable happen the rest of his career.

Another one I liked during this time was Turk Wendell. Not really obscure, played for a long time, but was quirky as heck. Had a lot of odd superstitions.
