Tiny Origami Challenge

in #origami5 years ago

Inspired by David Kawai instagramer in Canada. Link can be found here. Looks easy but as the paper gets smaller, a different approach is needed.

I started with a 20mm x 20mm and that was for practice run. The result is as in the picture below.
Yes, folding origami while at work. Dancing the edge of getting a warning letter.

Then I increased the challenge by reducing the size of paper by 50% to 10mm x 10mm, i.e. 1x1 cm.

10mm x 10mm
And the result wasn't what I expected but is close and not perfect.
20x20 vs 10x10 mm.

David's been making his cranes origami at 5x5mm. Yes, that is freaking small and very challenging especially the paper, sweaty hands and precise fold. Furthermore, he does it by hand where as I cheated with a ruler.

  • prefolds like this on a 100 x 100 mm paper

The trick he explained was to pre-fold the lines before performing the final crane in one squeeze.

I guess for David, he has reach and ultimate tiny crane size. Maybe to take it up a notch, he can fold microscopic carbon nanotubes aligned into a sheet form. As for me,
at the time of this post, I have yet to start on the 5x5 and yet the difficulty is preventing me from focusing. Perhaps will attempt it during the upcoming holidays.
