Senators in Ireland have voted in favour of a bill prohibiting the import of Israeli goods produced in the occupied Palestinian territories

Many Irish people have and continue to stand in Solidarity with Palestine , there has been a similar history between the two countries, what with Ireland being occupied by England in the past and England's continued rule over Northern Ireland. Indeed a lot of people globally believe that Ireland is part of the U.K. It is not, only Northern Ireland is, as it is under English rule. The rest of Ireland is a Republic.

But That is not what this article is about, what it is about is Ireland once again stepping forward and publicly said Not in My Name. They done it first in the 80's with their Anti-Apartheid stance towards the regime in South Africa and now they have done it again by passing a bill banning the sale of Israeli Settlement goods.
As reported in the Irish Times Newspaper on the 11th July 2018

The Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018, a private members Bill proposed by Independent Senator Frances Black, will make it an offence to purchase goods and services from Israeli settlements which have been condemned by Ireland and the EU as illegal.

or in Frances Black's own words

"We know that what is going on over there are war crimes to the Palestinian people.
"This is about banning goods. We are actually receiving stolen goods every time we receive goods into Ireland."

The current value of goods that are being exported to Ireland from Israeli settlements is between 500,000 euro and 1 Million Euro per year. The bill recognizes that the goods that are produced on Israeli settlements is land that was stolen from Palestinian people. Israel has been expanding its illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank since 1967. And even under growing worldwide pressure to halt the illegal seizure of land, Israel has continued to do so.

“In the last 18 months, the Israeli government has intensified its expansion onto Palestinian land at an increased rate and continued to forcibly remove Palestinian families from their homes and land against their will,”

The response from the Israeli Embassy was to say that this bill would in fact bring more harm to the Palestinians as it would be very harmful to any future negotiations. The is exactly the type of response that was expected.

“It will have a negative impact on the diplomatic process in the Middle East,” claimed a statement from the Israeli embassy. “The absurdity in the Seanad Éireann initiative is that it will harm the livelihoods of many Palestinians who work in the Israeli industrial zones affected by the boycott.”.

When I was living in Ireland I was involved in actions within supermarkets that labelled, very clearly goods that were being imported from Israel.Because even living far away we need to be doing something, we need to be active in not supporting all the violence that is happening over there. We can not continue to turn a blind eye. It is our individual actions that can start to make a difference.

So as I write this article I am very proud of the Irish people for getting behind this. Ireland already has over 500 artist's and musicians who have pledged to Boycott Israel.

“In response to the call from Palestinian civil society for a cultural boycott of Israel, we pledge not to avail of any invitation to perform or exhibit in Israel, nor to accept any funding from any institution linked to the government of Israel, until such time as Israel complies with international law and universal principles of human rights.

The above campaign began in 2010 and pledges to boycott Israeli cultural institutions until Israel complies with international law.

Many in Ireland have also called for the country to boycott Eurovision song contest which is due to take place in Israel next year. With the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Micheal Mac Donncha leading the way, he is currently banned from entering Israel after attending a conference in Ramallah at the invitation of the Palestinian Authority.

And speaking to Dublin Live about Israel's role in hosting next year's Eurovision, Mac Donncha said Ireland should show solidarity with the Palestinian people by refusing to enter.
He said: "I would support that, I don't think we should send a representative.
"I think the horrific ordeal of the Palestinian people needs to be highlighted. There needs to be solidarity just as there was with the people of South Africa with the apartheid regime."

I believe We need to be standing together, to find ways that send a clear message that what is happening in Countries like Palestine to the Palestinian people is not acceptable and that we will not support war crimes. It is up to us to be informed and to stay informed. To find the truth about what is happening and to make a stand together, to stop looking the other way. By looking the other way, we are supporting what is happening to the people of Palestine. I have and continue to boycott Israeli goods.

Big Big Thank You To @byn for designing my logo.

Sort:

And these are those moments when I'm so proud and happy to be living here. Now I'm hoping the Irish fighting spirit (non violent) keeps coming back and eventually stand up to those who control them here.

I know, there has been a lot of great things happening recently in Ireland, they have moved forward in so many, yet you have had to deal with and still have to deal with a shit side of it. Thanks @misslasvegas xx

That's true, but it's the good things that happen that keep me going. I've always felt that I am (still) here for a reason. Maybe it's because I need to fight this fight so I can show others that it's possible to fight the system. And maybe it's because I still have to shake a few people here LOL.

yeah keep shakin them up, hopefully when I come back in the autumn we could meet up somewhere xx

That would be great! I didn't even realize that you were leaving (left?) again. I wish you great adventures on the road!
