A day like today: Nagasaki

In the history of the twentieth century there is something that at first sight is not understood: in practice, World War II had already ended in April 1945. In the first days of May, the world seemed to envision a light after the long nightmare lived , the great protagonists of the tragedy were already beginning to give an account to the story: Hitler had committed suicide in his bunker and Mussolini had tried to flee to Switzerland hidden in the back of a cattle truck; he was arrested and tried, summarily shot.

The entire planet, men and women of peace from all over the World began to look for answers to the most bitter questions, and began to look for questions that had never been asked. It was urgent in that moment of peace to ask about war and hope for a world without violence.

Then, one morning on a warm and bright monday, a rumble never heard in history, shook the conscience of all who had consciousness, and a glow of a million suns rose above the earth and the heavens like no one ever had. imagined That was Hiroshima, destroyed by the first atomic bomb in history. And that name was forever synonymous with unnecessary horror.

And when the World did not come out of amazement and indignation, barbarism was repeated four days later against the civilian population of Nagasaki. One hundred thousand people, in just one second, became news, in fire, in ashes, in atoms, in nothing...

It was a day like today, August 9, 1945, in Nagasaki.

And since then, the World should know that life depends on those who do not know or respect it.
