A Prison of Thinking

Peace Steemians,

You might know the story of how Drew struggled at first to learn German before he finally became fluent...

Perhaps you don't know this was Drew fourth language learning failure.

The trouble started in elementary school when he couldn't learn Latin...

Drew didn't understand that class at all, so he just told jokes to the other kids.

In high school, Drew failed to learn French...

He sat in the first row trying to make the teacher yawn. And sometimes she did!

Then in college, he couldn't learn Spanish...

He always set the classroom's clock ahead a few minutes so lessons would be shorter.

But here's the strange thing...

Drew had only failed for 20 years, yet I continued using these same methods to learn German.

You see, he was in a prison of THINKING.

Drew believed language learning should be hard because it had been hard for him, and for everyone he knew.

Drew's teachers agreed, and added that if Drew didn't get fluent, it would be his fault.

So he tried working harder at learning Japanese because he thought "this time will be different."

Secretly, Drew felt like he was on another date after three bad relationships.

How did he escape?

Seeing some German children speaking with their parents showed him that there IS a better way...

But Drew only began to improve when he believed THEIR way was possible for HIM.

Today, he truly believes language learning is EASY...

The only HARD part is first helping students escape from the prison of "I can't."
