Steem Is Better Than Most On Here Give It Credit ForsteemCreated with Sketch.

An interesting study was done which is very telling for Steem.

Many on here seem to have the impression that Steem is some type of failure or not doing very well. They point to the problems that exist like it is unique and Steem is the only one going through this.

Of course, at the top of the list is the bots. Even Dan, himself, made note of that in the lead up to the Voice announcement. The key piece of that application is a social media site that had no bots.

The only challenge with this is that he ought to check his own house first.

It is no secret that DApps do not have a ton of usage thus far. They are lagging the centralized counterparts by a wide margin. This is to be expected considering the development gap and the huge lead the others had. However, over time, we can expect that to close.

Steem, for all of its ills, still ranks well when looking at the transactions that take place each day. According to blocktivity.info, Steem is sitting in 3rd place.

As we can see EOS is in the lead. It only makes sense since that blockchain has, so we are told, an incredible community with a lot of development taking place on it.

There is only one problem. A great deal of it is not real.

Make no mistake, there is still more taking place on EOS than any other blockchain, in terms of activity. It is not as much as one would think looking at these numbers.

There was a study done on EOS and this is what was found.

In the first quarter of 2019, blockchain bots made up 51 percent of unique accounts–and more than 75 percent of transactions!

In other words, every day the equivalence of $6 million USD in transaction volume is driven by bad bots.

It is also worth mentioning that a report back in February revealed that 93% of Ethereum DApp had zero transactions.

These are the two best known blockchains for DApp development and the size of the communities. They garner the attention which translated into marketcap.

What is interesting is Steem DApps fare much better. While not as many as the other two chains, we see usage on here. Steemhunt, Actifit, Busy, Steempeak, and Splinterland all have activity on a daily basis. This is excluding the most heavily used DApp, Steemit.com. Even now, I am posting this on Palnet.io, an interface that went live yesterday.

It is easy to look at the rest of the crypto world with the "grass is always greener" mindset. The facts are starting to emerge that, when the hype is removed, the reality of the situation is not as it seems. Steem gets little credit for the enormous progress is made. Does this mean it is without flaws? Absolutely not.

What I can tell you is there are a net of over 300 accounts each week getting their very first SP. This is a consistent number over the past 3 months or so. Again, I will admit this is not setting the world on fire yet we have people who are getting involved with this ecosystem.

Steem is going to make an impact on the world. We just need to keep building and growing the ecosystem. There are a lot of different pieces here that will attract people. It is just a matter of providing more features and getting the word out.

It is time to look beyond the hype that is tied to other chains and the negativity associated with Steem. Both are overdone.

Whats KIN? Never heard of them and they are number two.

Kin is the coin created by the makers of Kik messenger. You earn it by doing trivia or surveys through their app - however, it has problems. Originally, they marketed it as "then you c an trade in your Kin for gift cards," then they started always being sold out of gift cards and omitting Amazon (the one everyone wanted) gift cards entirely. Then they declared you could only trade in Kin for one of one type of gift card a month, which is about as often as they toss a small number of them up on the app to be able to trade for anyway. They feature "use Kin in our other apps" - but I dgaf about their other apps, except Kik, but using it there is like "make your chat a different color." I don't care about it being a different color? I would like to earn a COIN to be used as coins are used, for GOODS. I wouldn't have spent a few minutes every day to make my chat a different color, you know?
So I stopped doing the activities and am just checking the app every day to see if a gift card has become available that I can actually use (they're all pretty much for fluff luxury items in my book - so I'm collecting AMC movie theater gift cards with it. In several months, I've managed to buy three $5 gift cards and have that much again in Kin waiting to be spent, if they let me. After that I'm over it. I downloaded the thing to hopefully buy cat food with on Amazon - so much for that idea!

The token for KIK.

theres is FUD for the powering down of steeminc

People are always trying to hate on Steem and get folks to stop using it and use some alternative. Guess what? Those alternatives are just hype. It's easy to hype the internet, remember months ago the GoNetCoins contest where we were getting killed in activity for a while by unknown chains? All bot activity! We have legitimate, human activity going on here like crazy. I agree there are a lot of issues but everything does in the infancy stages; I don't fault people too much, it's incredibly difficult to run a successful business and environment such as this. We can only learn from past mistakes and hope we improve in the future. Steem has been getting more and more new folks each week from the various communities I'm a part of and it's awesome!

From my perspective, most of the hate on steem / steemit / related apps is less about finding alternatives. The main complaint I've encountered is that the bots have become over-powered that effectively robs resources from people trying to build up their presence AND from the platform itself that could be used to the same effect by using steem to self-promote content. That alone could create a viable market, the more people are actively USING cryptos the less the overall market will be susceptible to things like pump and dumps.

I agree with you that there's some legit human activity going on, which is probably the main reason the platform did not completely collapse when the price of cryptos dropped some months ago.

Haven't really looked at the metrics in some time, but when a platform starts hitting the millions of users, can't really call it 'infancy' anymore... the time to address issues to lower the barrier of entry to noobs is sooner rather than later.

Frankly, if a method were made to eliminate bots from the platform, suddenly the growth would return to organic, where people with interesting positions and ideas will float to the top without being overshadowed by those whose interactions are mainly bought and paid.

Yes and even people I introduced to Steem are starting to bring other people here too.

Really this post I'd say is an eye opener for me, steem is far off than steemit, steem would be successful I believe this.

Steem is a lot bigger than Steemit.

Palnet.io is one that is looking to improve on some of the issues with Steemit and Steem in general.

Okay I'll be looking forward to what palnet.io would have for us, I'll check it out right now!!!!
Thanks

I never really understood what the problem is with bots? I don't know a lot about them, but I suppose that if they haven't destroyed Steem so far, there must be a way to coexist with them and continue to grow. If Steem is capable of scaling to billions of users, bots will become a non issue as we develop ways to cancel out the negative impact that bots create.

I honestly think that is a skewed look at things. There could be many Dapps badly optimized that just hammer the steem blockchain for no reason thus the activity is up. When we look at how many people are actually using steemit its only about 15k that is a VERY far cry from the amount of sign ups etc.

We are in a gold mine that is going to be discovered by the mainstream. ;)

U didn't mention kin being at second place. I was interested how it happened.

As always great article.
