The Last Night

in #palnet5 years ago

She bit into a piece of stale pepperoni pizza and chewed slowly. Her face wrinkled in a grimace as she chewed. She quickly washed each bite down with a glass of water. She was grateful for the food and swallowed. She imagined a million other things she'd rather eat, but this was what was available tonight. There were no promises that she'd have food tomorrow.

Anna threw the empty box away and sat staring out the window. She needed a job, but without transportation her options were next to nothing.

The advertisement in the paper promised minimum wage. Maybe she could catch a bus. Her wallet held a five dollar bill that she'd stolen from Max the last night he was home. Max wouldn't miss the money and she knew he'd have drunk and partied away the $100+ he still had.

How had she gotten herself into this mess? She knew. She'd run from one bad situation to another. That seemed to be her MO. She would risk the $5 on bus fare and apply for the job Monday. She saved a piece of pizza for tomorrow, wrapping it in foil and refrigerating it. She wouldn't starve, yet.

Anna curled up on the sofa with a light blanket and tried to sleep, but the noise outside kept her awake.

When the lock turned in the door she was prepared for Max. A thin wire ran across the floor. The trip was attached to the handle. The last time he hit her would be the very last time he would have an opportunity to raise a hand to her. It would be hard, she knew, but she would find a way.

She closed her eyes at midnight knowing this night would be long but tomorrow finally held promise, if she lived to see daylight.

Ouch! Women shouldn't tolerate beating. First one should be the signal for leaving the relationship and reporting the abuser to the police.

A person never deserves abuse @mgaft1. Thanks for reading and commenting!
