Last Days of the Pan-American Games

These games are in their last week and I think they have been a complete success, no world records broken but still very agreeable to watch, I saw a lot of athletics today, some stunning races in which, at least the ones I saw, the winners came from behind with last second sprints which made them very exciting. Costa Rica got a gold medal in hurdles which was great. The US has the most medals and the top 5 are US, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and Cuba, of course these countries have some of the largest delegations and participate in most of the sports, so that is understandable.

And then last night we (Honduras) managed somehow to get into the gold medal game for football which will be against Argentina. We won by penalties against Mexico, of course they were the favorites but I actually think Honduras was slightly better all through the game including the extra times, it was strange because at one moment of these extra 30 minutes we had one man sent off so we were down one but in a couple of minutes they had two sent off so we finished with 10 and they with 9. In the penalties fortunately Mexico missed their first shot and from there it was easy, the Mexicans had the pressure and missed a second one so we eventually won the shoot out 4-2.

Now we play Argentina for gold, a medal this country has never won, of course just hearing Argentina-Honduras and you automatically think Argentina takes it, but this team has been lucky, we were down 2-0 against Peru and in the six minutes over time we tied it, then we lost against Uruguay 3-0, Peru just had to beat Jamaica 1-0 and we were out, Peru lost. And last night we played against what was considered and probably is, a better team but we won so I think the gold medal is possible. Of course I also thought we were going to beat Uruguay.
