First Impressions of Colombia

in #partiko5 years ago (edited)

Today we awoke in Bogota, Colombia's vibrant and bustling capital city. I've never been to a major city in Latin America and can say I'm pleasantly surprised. Having travelled all around the northern hemisphere on this trip we decided to go south and this is the first stop on our journey. Bogota is 2640m above sea level so we took it a little easy today and just walked around.

Above is the main square, Plaza de Bolivar. They love that guy here and name many things after Simon Bolivar, Colombia's first president. Many of the streets are crowded and people are selling all sorts of things. It's Sunday and the markets are active. We spent the morning walking around their central park and visited the botanical gardens.

The main park is named after-you guessed it, Simon Bolivar. It has a small lake and lots of sporty Colombians. They close many roads here on Sundays and people bike around and walk their dogs. I was suprised by the amount of beautiful dogs, there are all sorts of breeds. We have only seen one cat though, but that was the first night we arrived. Maybe they're sleeping during the day.

The botanical gardens were a peaceful way to start the day. They are next to the main park and the entrance fee was about a dollar. We came on the trip to see nature and it was nearby our airport hotel. After the morning walk we headed off to our downtown residence.

Found a great appartment in Colombia's tallest residential building for a very reasonable price. It is located downtown right next to all the action. In the afternoon, went to the Gold museum, which I'll write about in a later post and walked around the historic center. Because of our late arrival last night, tonight will be an early one. I'll leave you with the view from our room of Monserrate, we may go up there tomorrow morning before exploring more of the city.

I would love to go Colombia and yeah they do like naming things after bolivar I noticed that @crypticat, all the places you visited so far are already really nice from the square to the park and that building is HUGE!

Highly recommend it. The food is amazing and the beef and wine are half the price of a supermarket back home in a nice restaurant

Well, even if you are in a "cat free zone" for a while, I'll still enjoy following along in your travels; never spent any time in South America (Closest I have been is Port of Spain, Trinidad), so it's always interesting to follow first-hand accounts.

=^..^=

I'll be sure to take photos of the cats we see along the way. Hopefully there will be some material for Caturday. Never been to Trinidad, how was it?

Oh have you gone to Medellin? I wanna go there someday. 😊
