Sangla Hill city of Alexander's Historians Seven Kings and King Kusa

in #partiko5 years ago

The City Sangla of Alexander's historians, Sakcala of the Brahmans and Sagal of Buddhism is chiefly of interest in connection with the theories woven round the rocky hill known as Sanglawala Tibba and the ruins crowning it. In 1896 the height of the Sanglawala Tibba presently known as Sangla Hill was reported 215 feel abeve the surroandings plain on its north side.

The Brahminical accounts of Sakala are based upon the Mahabharta. The Buddhist notices of sagal refer chiefly to its history in connection with Buddhism A legend is told of seven kings who wen towards Sagal to carry of Prabhavati the wife of King Kusa but the king, mounting an elephant, met them outside the city and cried out with so loud a voice. " I am Kusa," that the exclamation was heard over the whole world, and the seven king fled away in terror. There is no significant mention of Sangla until A.D.633, when it was visited by Hwen Thsang, who deecribes the neighbouring town of Tsekia as the capital of a large Kingdom,; which extended from the Indus to the Beas, and from the foot of the hill to the confluence of the five rivers. The classical notices of Sangla are to be found in the historical accounts of Arrians and Curtious. They mentioied that Alexander heard that certain free Indians and Katheans, residing in the surrounding of Sangla Hil, were resolved to give him battle if he attempted to Iead his army thither. He no sooner heard this than he immediately changed his previous direction of his march towarda the Ganges and proceeded towards Sangla. He re-crossed the river Rayi to punish the people Sangla were daring to withhold their submission.

A that time Sangla was a great city defended not only by wall but by swamp also. Historians deseribe the city itself as strong both by the art and nature, being defend by the back walls and covered by the lake. Outside the city there is hill which the katheans had surrounded with a triple time wall carts for the protection of their camps. The greeks tge camps carried the first and second carts and drove the defenders back to to the city walls.the wall of the city was breached by the undermining and places were taken by the assaults.
