Knife -5minutefreewrite

He was anxious for everyone to go to bed. He washed his hands and cleaned his knife.

Bill was so excited for his birthday party. Everyone was still hanging out, even though the ritual cutting of the wedding cake was done and he'd washed his hands and cleaned his knife. Janet, his sister who got married and used his knife to cut her cake, was chatting with her bridesmaids. Her new husband was chatting with Dad. It was like they didn't want to be well rested for his birthday party in the morning. Janet had been saying "kill two birds with one stone" for three months and he'd started to believe her when everyone was arriving. But now it seemed like everyone was just here for her wedding. Sigh.

At least he had gotten a present early. This was his knife, and they'd used it to cut the cake, so it was a special knife. He'd licked it clean first. No sense wasting cake.

This wasn't the first time Bill's eldest sister had outshone him. When he'd won a perfect attendance record last year, she'd announced her engagement, and even before that, he'd had his first sleepover planned and that was the first time she brought her now husband to meet the family for dinner.

Justin had been similarly unimpressed. That was why they were still best friends.

PART 2

"I was unsure of her motivation for changing that pattern." Justin always talked like that. Bill had just finished telling him about all these times that she had usurped his big day, and then had noted that on his graduation day, nothing. Bill had been prepared to not even tell his parents which day he'd be graduating from Stanford, certain that they wouldn't be able to come because of something Sherry would have that day... like the birth of her first child or something. But there was nothing, he had told them, and they'd come to his graduation and it was... fine. It wasn't what he'd been expecting after all these years.

"Maybe she finally..." Justin looked at Bill's expression. He was befuddled. Bill was crying. "Are you sick?"

Bill wasn't sick. He was coming to a realization. The world is cold, cruel, and indifferent. Sherry had been protecting him all these years from that truth. By combining her days with his days, he always had something to blame when things weren't turning out perfect. If he really thought about it, she'd always made sure all the details of his parties went well. She gave him lots of attention, and made sure people he cared about were around him.

But that wasn't why he was crying. She hadn't done that for him this time. She must not care about him like she used to. It makes sense, they're both adults now. But to have had that kind of care and not appreciate and then just lose it as you realize...

And so he cried.
