Sepia Saturday: Nongkhai streets early in the morning,

in #partiko5 years ago (edited)

This is my late entry for #sepiasaturday by @old-guy-photos. Nongkhai streets early in the morning reflect peace and quiet of the overall atmosphere of this small border town.

The mixture of old and new buildings along this old and first road in Nongkhai makes my head turned sometimes. I used to see more old wooden houses of more than eighty years when I first visited Nongkhai. Then there are remaining buildings built during the 1960s and 1970s which have their own distinctive designs. But contemporary or modern houses really are very disappointing in terms of beauty and harmony.

Young designers and builders seem to have lost touch with our interdependent relationship with nature and the root of local culture. New houses do not give any regards to the directions of the sun and seasonal wind flows. We can no longer find any design details which reflect local cultural heritage. So, these buildings look rather hard and boring. People’s well being is influenced by the buildings they live in so I am not surprised by changes in people’s attitudes nowadays. I just hope that younger generations of designers would try to maintain a link to the old cultural wisdom of the past.

Wishing you a very cheerful day.

Cheers.

Nice to know that there are people planting trees around the world! Last year flood in Nongkhai meant that about 300 young trees I planted mine months earlier all perished!
I have been trying to create a wooded area on my empty land. I imagine that it would be one a small forest for birds, insects, small reptiles which are beginning to disappear slowly around the village. Countryside us becoming too quickly developed by estate agents!

Thanks for your good effort!
Cheers.

Thank you. Some houses are very old.

There are indeed both aesthetic and functional advantages to traditional architecture.

Yeah, older generations of designers and architects had enjoyed living in old houses and buildings which have been designed to give people comfort and happiness. Nowadays houses and buildings are built upon profit margins.

Wow! These are fabulous sepia shots! I agree!! This generation does not take the same things into consideration when building. To be fair, a lot of them take into consideration the sun, shade and how they can fit 500 people into one building.

Sometimes more is less, right?

I truly miss seeing the old architecture and the touches of the past that used to be more prevalent in the landscape here. It seems they are dying off and a new generation of builders have gone their own way.

Wishing you a cheerful day as well!

Hahaha! Yes, I do agree that new generation of designers and builders have become very business like and they are very good at marketing their ‘spacious and modern’ units in the most efficient and profitable way. So there are talk stacks of pigeon holes for people to perch in! Gradually people are transformed into pigeons without realizing what has happened. It would be nice to have an aesthetic impact assessment of large buildings as well as EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment)

Small is beautiful!

If the buildings show some respect to dwellers, they would react differently in their surrounding. We don’t normally see people behave badly in old majestic churches, temples or beautifully designed buildings. Profits, money and speed& efficiency have become the new design criteria. So, new dwellers have become more materialistic and robot-like!

Those designers are much less happier too!
They don’t really know what they are doing to themselves and the world they live in. May be they never have a chance to live in nicely designed houses with sympathetic considerations for good living atmosphere before.

Thank you very much for your comment and generosity.
