Peace is the presence of justice

There is no way to peace, peace is the way. That’s a saying I’ve known and appreciated for a long time. I’ve also known that peace is not just the absence of war. Something cannot be defined by just saying what it is not. But I haven’t really known much about peace because it is a topic most people honestly disdain, find laughable, naïve, and just a waste of time, amazing as that sounds. Then I heard something new, but not really new as Ralph Nader has always said that the great work of humankind on earth is to work for justice. I always appreciated that too. Yet when I heard it said that; “Peace is the presence of justice”, that just wrapped it up in a whole new beautiful package for me. It entirely makes sense as well that in our world so focused on devastation, lack of resources, the myth of scarcity, and our debt and deficiency driven culture, we are so far away from promoting the presence of things that are good. We promote war and money. Those are central. We don’t promote health, nor education, nor ecology, nor culture, nor diversity.

If justice is not blind it will be a weapon of terror. It will be vengeance. People love vengeance. It is simple blood lust. In the end, maybe it’s just ourselves that ultimately hold us back from peace. Peace is nuanced, diverse, and cultivated. War is simple hatred and the terror of fear. Let's live in the presence of justice instead.
